No-one wants to hear it, but ageing is inevitable.
Wrinkles, fine lines and crow’s feet are all part of the package as we grow older and yes, there are toxins, polynucleotides and a vast array of beauty products out there, but how can we support our skin from the inside out? Is there something we can do to help our skin look and feel youthful for longer?
While a dedicated skincare routine is essential, many are turning to supplements to boost their efforts and promote healthier skin. Here we will look at some key supplements/superheros that can aid in the fight against ageing (and a bit of science behind why they work).
Collagen
Collagen is the main player of skin structure. It’s the protein that gives your skin its firmness, suppleness and youthful glow. As we age our body’s natural collagen production slows down which results in sagging skin, wrinkles and loss of elasticity.
Collagen peptides, either bovine or marine, found in supplements are broken down into amino acids that support your body in creating more collagen. They improve hydration, elasticity and overall texture. Regular supplements can help replenish lost collagen and promote a more youthful appearance.
Look out for hydrolyzed collagenpeptides in powder or capsule form for maximum absorption and add a scoop to your morning coffee.
Vitamin C is a potent antioxidant that helps protect skin cells from damage caused by free radicals. It plays an important role in collagen synthesis which we already know is the key to firm skin. Vitamin C helps to brighten the skin helping to even out skin tone and fade dark spots.
Topical Vitamin C will complement oral supplements for a more comprehensive approach.
Hyaluronic acid
Hyaluronic acid is a naturally occurring substance in the body that helps retain moisture. The scientific name for this is humectant, meaning it draws moisture into the skin, think of hyaluronic acid as a sponge for your skin – holding onto moisture and making wrinkles less pronounced.
It works even better when taken with vitamin C!
Biotin
For hair, nails and skin. Whilst Biotin is most commonly associated with hair growth it plays a significant role in maintaining healthy, glowing skin. It helps to strengthen skin cells, reduce dryness and improve the overall texture of your skin. It is often taking in combination with other B vitamins, look out for B complex supplements that include Biotin and other essential nutrients like B5.
Astaxanthin
Astaxanthin is a much less known but incredibly potent antioxidant that comes from algae. It’s sometimes called the ‘king of antioxidants’ because it is 6000 times more powerful than vitamin C. It helps to protect your skin from UV damage, improves skin elasticity and even works to reduce the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles. It is fat soluble so it is best taken with a meal containing healthy fats, think avocado, to improve absorption.
Zinc
Zinc is essential for skin repair and regeneration and based on a few studies it has been found to increase the duration that your botox lasts for. It plays a crucial role in collagen production and helps protect the skin from damage. It also has anti-inflammatory properties that can benefit those with acne or other skin conditions.
Vitamin E
Another powerful antioxidant. Known for its ability to fade scars and soothe dry skin this antioxidant can be taken in supplement form to help protect the skin from the inside by neutralising oxidative stress which can lead to premature ageing. It can leave the skin soft and supple.
While supplements alone won’t give you the skin of a 20 year old, they can help to slow down ageing, reduce wrinkles and give you a healthier, more radiant complexion. They should form part of your skincare routine which must include SPF sun protection, a balanced diet and good sleep. But with the right supplements you can give your skin all the help it needs to slow down the clock against ageing.
*Always seek advice from your pharmacist before taking any supplements especially if you are on medication or have any medical conditions.
